Junior Lifeguards Share Vital Beach Safety Tips and Program Updates
Junior lifeguard cadets presented crucial beach safety tips to the Town Board and the public. Key advice included learning to swim, reading ocean conditions, knowing beach access points for emergencies (using letters/numbers like M for Montauk, A for Amagansett, W for Wainscott), and immediately calling 911. They emphasized never attempting a swimming rescue without a flotation device, swimming near lifeguards, never swimming alone, respecting surf conditions, understanding flag colors (green, yellow, red, no flag), and that non-swimmers should not rely solely on flotation devices. For rip currents, the advice was to stay calm and swim parallel to shore. They also warned against diving into unknown or shallow waters and cautioned about the dangers of digging deep holes on the beach. Finally, the committee addressed the impact of unregulated businesses, such as food trucks and ride-sharing services, on local businesses and traffic congestion, recommending a more proactive approach to supporting local businesses.
