Capital Budget Uncertainties; Election & Event Updates Provided

Waste Reduction Committee Proposes Enhanced Recycling and Composting Initiatives
Jane Bergen, a member of the Walpole Waste Reduction Committee, spoke during the public forum to advocate for the town to adopt a 'tot' (total waste) option for trash pickup, which would involve larger recycling bins to accommodate more recyclables and potentially reduce overall waste volume. She also proposed researching the feasibility of expanding composting programs, possibly at Robins Road, and suggested forming a subcommittee to investigate this. The board indicated support for her to send a formal email outlining these proposals.
Emergency Water Connection & Automated Trash Pickup Discussed
The board discussed the potential for an emergency water system connection with the MWRA. Initial estimates for the design phase are $50,000-$100,000, with the total estimated cost for the pump station at $5.3 million. Concerns were raised about the process, the impact on the capital plan, and the need to clarify the declaration of a water supply emergency. The board is seeking more information and guidance before making a decision, with a future discussion planned. Separately, the town is moving forward with a new solid waste contract, transitioning to an automated curbside trash and recycling program, including 96-gallon carts for trash and recycling, with an option for residents to obtain a 64-gallon cart. Bulky item pickup will be once a month by appointment.
New Town Engineer Welcomed; Pole Relocation Approved
The select board officially welcomed Joe as the new town engineer, who brings over 15 years of experience in civil engineering and land development. He is a graduate of Walpole High School and UMass Amherst. The board also approved a request from NSTAR Electric Company to relocate a utility pole on East Street to facilitate a new driveway entrance at 10:15 East Street. The request was approved unanimously by the board with a 5-0 vote.
