Select Board Approves Multiple Entertainment Permits for Trillium Events
The Select Board approved multiple one-day entertainment permits for Trillium, located at 100 Royal Street. These permits cover events including a DJ on the outdoor patio (August 23rd), a Hops and Horsepower car show with alcohol service (September 13th), October Fest with live entertainment (September 20th), a Cabbie Road Race with DJMC and alcohol service (September 27th), and Fall Fest with live entertainment (October 11th). All permits are subject to police, fire, and building approval.
Resident Alleges Property Destruction and Links Accused Individuals to Criminal Activity
During the public comment section, a resident expressed concerns about property destruction by 'bad citizens' and mentioned specific incidents, including damage to a customer's property by a construction excavator. The resident also alluded to a corrupt individual named John Connolly, who is described as racist and having a history of abusive behavior towards women and Black people. The speaker stated that Connolly was the boss of Sean Good and questioned why Connolly and Rafferty are not facing scrutiny. Allegations of threats and past criminal activity, including a connection to the deaths of John O'Keefe and four others, were also made against these individuals.
Canton Pickleball Community Advocates for Permanent Courts, Questions Cost Estimates
The Canton community has been advocating for permanent pickleball courts since 2017. A presentation was made regarding estimated costs for pickleball courts at Ponkapog, near the Welcome to Canton sign. The proposed location is described as perfect, being flat, clear, without nearby homes, and no wetlands, which is expected to make it affordable. However, concerns were raised that the provided cost estimates did not accurately reflect the proposed project. Comparisons were made to similar projects in Easton and Sharon, where courts were built for significantly less. The community is asking for action and for the project to be placed on the capital planning agenda and for CPA applications to be submitted.
Select Board Approves 2.5% Rent Increase Cap for Multiple Affordable Housing Properties
The board reviewed rent increase requests for Millside, One Arbor Wedding Way in Prine Hills. Kevin Shea provided historical data on rent increases approved by the board, noting 5% approvals in 2003 and 2004 based on state guidance post-COVID. In 2025, the vote was broken into three motions: maximum allowable rents for new tenants, maximum allowable rents for tenants with housing vouchers, and a lesser of 5% or maximum allowable rent for existing tenants at renewal. The current area median income increase is 3.6%. The board discussed a motion to set rent increases at 2.5% across the board for new tenants, tenants with housing vouchers, and existing tenants, aligning with the 2.5% COLA raise given to town employees. This motion was approved unanimously (4-0) for Prine Hills, Arboretum Way, and Heritage Park.
Town Administrator Search Underway; Public Input Encouraged Through Anonymous Channel
Jody, providing an update on the Town Administrator search, reported that MRI, the contracted search firm, conducted a site visit on June 30th and met with various stakeholders. They were impressed with the town and its engagement. MRI is developing a candidate profile, and the job posting is expected to be published on July 17th, with applications accepted until August 17th. Candidate information will be kept anonymous and go directly to MRI. A dedicated, anonymous email address (cantonTAsearch@mriv.com) has been established for residents to provide input on desired qualities for the next Town Administrator. An update on the number of applicants and next steps is expected in September.
