City Council Considers Sales Tax Measure for Critical Infrastructure Needs

The City Council is considering placing a local sales and use tax measure on the November 2026 ballot to address significant unmet needs and infrastructure deficits, estimated to exceed $100 million. The proposed measure, a transactions and use tax (sales tax), would be placed on the ballot for voter approval and could generate substantial revenue, with options ranging from a quarter-cent to a full cent increase. The revenue is intended for critical projects such as police and fire stations, street and sidewalk improvements, and the Smith Park pool. Staff presented potential revenue generation and bonding capacity for different tax rates, recommending at least a three-quarters cent or a full cent increase to adequately fund these projects. The city is also working on state legislation to potentially increase the sales tax cap in Los Angeles County to allow for a full cent increase. The final decision on the measure and its amount will be made on June 16th, with the ultimate approval resting with the voters.
