South Pasadena Decommits CDBG Funds from Senior Nutrition Program Due to Administrative Burden
The City Council considered and approved the de-committing of $17,604 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds previously allocated to the Senior Nutrition Program for fiscal year 2025-2026. This action was taken due to updated guidance from the Los Angeles County Development Authority requiring verification of citizenship or eligible immigration status, which staff deemed administratively burdensome and outside the city's typical scope. The funds will be offset by general fund resources, and future reallocation of the decommitted CDBG funds will require separate council consideration.

During the regular City Council meeting, Larry Eckholm and Jorge Gordizola spoke during public comment regarding traffic safety concerns at specific intersections. Eckholm requested a stop sign at Oak and Diamond due to high-speed traffic. Gordizola highlighted the failure of the existing crosswalk at Meridian and Hope to slow traffic and requested a three-way stop and removal of parking to improve sightlines. Council acknowledged these concerns, noting that public comment is taken into consideration.
South Pasadena Council Approves Option 2A for Fremont Corridor Improvements, Including Dedicated Bike Lanes and Roundabouts
The City Council considered and approved design alternatives for the Huntington Drive and Fremont Avenue corridor improvement project, focusing on Fremont Avenue. After extensive discussion and public comment, the council voted to approve Option 2A for most segments of Fremont Avenue, which includes a dedicated cycle track separated from vehicular traffic by a concrete barrier. Option 2 was approved for Segment 1 due to its narrower width. The council also approved the proposed roundabout designs at Fremont Avenue and Hope Street, and Fremont Avenue and Oxley Street. This decision aims to improve safety and multimodal transportation along these key corridors, despite concerns raised about parking impacts, tree removal, and potential conflicts in shared use areas.
South Pasadena Council Approves Pursuit of Grant Funding for Electric Public Works Vehicles
The City Council discussed and approved the pursuit of grant funding for the purchase of two electric vehicles for the Public Works Department. The South Coast AQMD's Electrification program offers to offset 50% of the cost, with a city match required. The proposed vehicles are a Class III sewer maintenance truck from Voltu and a Class IV water department vehicle from Evo Electric. The grant application deadline is June 30th, 2026. The city's contribution for both vehicles, after the grant, would be approximately $225,338.
