Rosemead Parks Commission Discusses Special Olympics, Park Outreach, and Future Park Development
The Parks Commission meeting included a presentation on the Special Olympics Boce Ball team, the Rosemead Rollers, recognizing their achievements in local competitions. Coaches Jennifer Gomez and Jacenia Soria were commended for their work. The meeting also featured an update on park outreach efforts for playground and park upgrades, with the 'Space Explorer Playground' theme being the most popular choice for playgrounds, and outdoor fitness equipment and pickleball courts being the top requested upgrades. Additionally, Commissioner Lamb brought forward a discussion regarding potential new park spaces and joint use agreements with school districts to address a lack of public space in the southwest portion of the city. The department provided an overview of current parks and schools, and discussed the lengthy process of establishing joint use agreements. The possibility of using grant money for park improvements, including 'living schoolyards' and bike lanes, was also explored. The department also provided a monthly update on various programs and upcoming events, including summer youth programs, a free summer lunch program, and the 4th of July parade and carnival. Finally, the commission discussed potential for bike infrastructure and community walking events.
