Pickerington School District Board Discusses Budget Deficit and Cost-Cutting Measures

The Pickerington Local School District Board of Education held a work session to discuss financial updates, specifically focusing on the impact of the May 5th levy failure. The deficit for fiscal year 2029 has grown to $19 million, up from a previous projection of $14 million, largely due to a projected labor agreement. The board is considering a plan to reduce this deficit to zero. Phase one of planned reductions includes eliminating field trips charged to the general fund, increasing pay-for-participation fees, eliminating return transportation for away athletic events, reducing athletic teams, eliminating summer school (except for credit recovery for nine seniors), and implementing a 25% reduction across departments, totaling approximately $9.9 million in savings over three fiscal years. Phase two, planned for implementation if an additional income tax is not passed in November, would involve further reductions in administrative and instructional staff, elimination of on-campus college credit plus classes, and further reduction of athletic teams, totaling $4.3 million in savings over two and a half fiscal years. Phase three, planned for July 1, 2027, would include further reductions in electives, transportation radius, middle school band and orchestra, increasing pay-for-play, additional administrative and instructional coaches, and further reductions in school budgets, totaling $19.066 million over two fiscal years. The board is also discussing its cash balance policy, which requires a 45-day operating expense cash balance, and considering potential revenue asks and cost reductions for future levies.
