SBA Offers Disaster Loan Assistance for St. Landry Parish Residents and Businesses Following Tropical Storm Arthur
Phil Walls from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Disaster Recovery and Relief provided information on disaster assistance loan funding available to residents, homeowners, businesses, and nonprofits in St. Landry Parish following the storms around June 17th associated with Tropical Storm Arthur. A disaster declaration was issued on July 7th, opening applications until August 31st. Renters can apply for up to $100,000 for property replacement. Homeowners are eligible for $100,000 for property and up to $500,000 for structure repair/replacement. Businesses and nonprofits can receive up to $2 million for structures/equipment/inventory and an additional $2 million through the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program for ongoing financial responsibilities. These are low-interest federal loans, with rates as low as 2.875% for homeowners/renters and 4% for businesses, with terms up to 30 years. The SBA emphasized that disaster relief assistance is not limited to businesses. A community meeting is being planned to provide more detailed information.
City Council Approves Monthly Financial Reports Amidst Ongoing Budget Deficit
The City Council reviewed and approved the monthly reports for the Property Tax Department and the Treasurer. The Property Tax Department reported that as of June 2026, $1,310,091.26 had been collected towards property taxes, with $16,992.08 remaining. An online tax auction was scheduled for July 23rd, 2026, for approximately 163 properties. The Treasurer's report for June 2026 indicated a net loss of $564,123 for the general fund, a net profit of $203,811 for the water fund, and a net profit of $113,848 for the sewer fund, resulting in an overall net loss of $246,464 for June. Year-to-date, the city incurred a net loss of $372,976, with losses decreasing monthly in anticipation of finishing the fiscal year strongly. Sales tax collections in June 2026 showed a decrease of $39,31 compared to June 2025 and a decrease of $43,042 compared to May 2026.
Canine Officer Cobra Retires, Council Approves Police and Fire Department Personnel Changes and New Cadet Contract
The council recognized the retirement of Canine Officer Cobra, a Belgian Malinois acquired in August 2020, who served as a dual-purpose dog for narcotics detection and apprehension. During her service, Cobra was credited with detecting significant amounts of marijuana and locating heroin and fentanyl, as well as apprehending multiple fugitives and suspects. Her retirement was effective June 30th, 2026, and she was retired to the custody of Officer Grace Hatton. The council also approved personnel changes for the police and fire departments, including accepting resignations, hiring new officers and firefighters, confirming permanent status for officers, and promoting fire personnel. A new contract was also put in place for police cadets requiring a two-year commitment to prevent them from leaving for other departments after training.
Louisiana Strolls 14U Baseball Team Celebrated for Winning 2nd World Series Championship
The Louisiana Strolls baseball team was honored for winning the 2nd World Series championship in Brosion Bolt, Oklahoma. The team went undefeated in the 15-series games, defeating teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Prior to the World Series win, they secured five first-place tournament finishes and one second-place finish. The 14U season concluded with a 36-0 record. The team is coached by Charles Gallo, Perry Gallo, TJ Calvin, Matt Nugent, and Davis Jones. The council expressed immense pride in the team's achievement and their representation of the city.
Appaloosas Museum Announces Upcoming Events, Including Story Time and Zeit Curl Festival
Ms. Patrice Melnick from the Appaloosas Museum and Interpretive Center provided an update on upcoming events. Story time will be held at the museum on Thursdays due to library renovations. The 44th Zeit Curl Festival is scheduled, with a press party at the museum on August 6th at noon and the festival itself on September 5th at the MBLE building, honoring Sid Williams of El Citos. Story time on Thursdays is at 10 AM and includes activities and snacks for children.
