Baker City Council Adopts Ordinance to Enhance Peace Disturbing Laws
The council adopted Ordinance 2026-20, which amends Chapter 14, Article 3, Section 14103 of the city code concerning disturbing the peace. The ordinance aims to expand prohibited conduct, increase penalties, and provide for enhanced enforcement to address community concerns about mayhem on the streets of Baker. The mayor and city attorney were thanked for their assistance in enhancing existing ordinances.
EBR Council on Aging Updates on Senior Projects and Seeks Millage Renewal
Tasha Clark Amar, CEO of the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging (EBRCOA), presented an update on senior services and upcoming projects, requesting support for the renewal of the EBRCOA millage on the June 27th ballot. She highlighted past collaborations, including the renovation of the Baker Senior Center, and detailed plans for the Lotus Village at the Lakes development, which will feature senior housing with intergenerational components, a community center, food pantry, and swimming pool. Amar also mentioned the EBRCOA's track record of serving seniors, including providing over 8.4 million meals and investing over $32 million in capital improvements. The presentation also touched upon ongoing projects like the one at Plank and Kent Road, which is 78% complete and aims to provide 59 units and an intergenerational center. A program called 'Take It Forward' will teach seniors technology skills at the Baker Center. The Lotus Village is projected to take 18 months for construction.

The resolution declared May 2026 as Arthritis Awareness Month. The Mental Health Awareness Month resolution emphasized the importance of mental health for overall well-being and acknowledged the prevalence of mental illness, particularly its onset in younger years. It also noted the positive impact of early identification and treatment and recognized the city's commitment to supporting mental health through education and resources. The resolution declared May 2026 as Mental Health Awareness Month.
