City Administrator Explains Load Shedding and Electricity Conservation Measures

The city administrator explained the concept of load shedding, a conservation measure implemented during extremely hot weather to reduce electricity demand and costs. This involves temporarily cycling off power to residential units in batches, typically on the fourth hot day in a row. The system manages approximately 14 geographic areas within the community. The goal is to save money by avoiding peak demand costs, which occur when electricity prices surge due to high demand across multiple regions. The city also participates by using backup generation at municipal facilities to reduce its own load on the grid. Additionally, during periods of extreme system-wide stress regulated by the Midwest Independent System Organization (MISO), residents are asked to voluntarily reduce electricity usage by adjusting thermostats and avoiding large appliance use during peak hours.
