Parks & Recreation Updates: Fields on Track, Trail Bidding Soon, Revenue Surpasses Last Year's Totals
The multi-purpose fields are progressing on schedule for completion by the end of August. The main trail through Fairview, from Lafayette Pavilion to the Splash Pad, will go out to bid next week through August, with awarding expected by year-end and construction starting in early spring. Nature trails are also progressing. Financially, the Parks and Recreation department has reached its total revenue from last year ($215,000) and is projected to exceed it, driven by pavilion rentals, the summer playground camp (which has already surpassed last year's revenue by over $10,000 due to added care options and overall popularity), and successful summer programs. The I Can Bike Camp and summer playground camp were notable successes. The department also managed the fireworks event and assisted with splash pad cleanup. Megan, a new hire in early June, is performing exceptionally well, handling the fireworks event independently.
Public Works Updates: Fleet Maintenance, Road Repairs, and Utility Installations Progressing
The mechanic report indicates a busy month, with significant work on truck inspections and police vehicle repairs. The department has begun fabricating key electric kiosks for the Navy ball fields using a newly hired welder. New tires were purchased for a side cutter, and new sign personnel have been busy with calls and installing new signs. Roadside work includes cutting right-of-ways and managing weeds. Base repair and asphalt work were completed on Alpine Road, Lake Mont, and Hickory Grade Road. A tree fell recently, but no major damage resulted. Stormwater inlets were repaired before paving, specifically on Melrose Court. Installation of gas, water, and sewer lines is complete at the May View site, with water connected and gas hookup pending. The parks crew is maintaining grass and assisting with fireworks and splash pad cleanup. Work on Hickory Grade Road widening is nearing completion, with base paving done and top asphalt pending, along with grading and edge work.
Activity Center Construction Underway; Public Works Facility Design Nears Completion
Construction has commenced on the activity center, with bids awarded to the lowest responsible bidders and all parties under contract. A pre-construction meeting was held, and internal demolition began last week. Project meetings are scheduled bi-weekly, with the first one occurring on the day of the meeting. The conceptual design for the public works facility is ongoing, with a meeting scheduled with the architectural team to finalize the process within approximately 30 days, aiming for bidding by year-end or shortly after. Building permit revenue for June saw a significant spike due to a deadline for projects reviewed under the 2018 code, with all eligible projects being permitted.
Parks Labor Position Tabled for Executive Session; Meeting Adjourns
The motion to advertise for the parks labor position was taken under advisement and tabled into executive session. The solicitor reported having nothing further at this time. Public comment was opened, and then the board moved to adjourn.
Intern Enhances Website Accessibility and Supports Community Outreach Initiatives
The communications and digital accessibility intern is working on updating the township website and documents to comply with federal regulations regarding accessibility for screen readers and translating software. Approximately 400-500 documents are being cataloged for archiving, unpublishing, updating, or conversion. The intern is also supporting the director with various responsibilities, including writing articles for the 'South Bay Connect' magazine, attending business events for community outreach, and assisting with township events like concerts in the park and Touch a Truck through social media promotion and logistical support. The intern's work is sponsored by the local government academy.
