Pickleball Facility Variance Granted After Noise Concerns Addressed
The discussion focused on a proposed pickleball facility at 179 Main Street, initially planned as a 25,000 square foot indoor facility with six courts within a historic 1900 car barn. The project also proposed six outdoor courts on an existing gravel area. Variances were previously granted for the indoor facility. However, the outdoor courts faced continued delays due to noise concerns from residential abutters. A third-party sound review by PSM LLC determined that using U.S. pickleball certified quiet paddles would keep noise within the acceptable 55-decibel limit. The Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) granted the variance for the outdoor courts on July 7th, with conditions including no Sunday hours before 10 a.m. and the provision of quiet paddles free of charge. The ZBA and planning board accepted these measures.
Rockenham Grand Casino to Replace Live Casino, Featuring Historic Mural
Churchill Downs has acquired the former Lord and Taylor building at One Mall Road, previously slated to be a Live Casino by Cordish Companies. The property will be rebranded as Rockenham Grand Casino, paying homage to the racetrack. The project includes a mural on the building's side featuring historic images of the racetrack, which required planning board approval. This rebranding and inclusion of local historical elements indicate a strong commitment from the new owner to integrate with and honor the local community.
