The Port Wentworth City Council recognized and awarded life-saving ribbons to two firefighters and two police officers for their immediate and decisive actions in responding to a child drowning emergency. The award highlighted the extraordinary courage and professionalism of Corporal Ajeda, Corporal Douglas, Officer Angel Navares, and Officer Steven Parker, as well as the firefighters involved, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the community.
Resident Proposes Community Mural on City Hall
During the public commentary section, a resident named Spencer Gake proposed the idea of installing a mural on the back of City Hall. Gake suggested that the mural would be visible from areas where festivals and events are held, acting as a unifying symbol for the community. Potential designs include elements representing the police and fire departments' shoulder patches and interweaving community tree branches to symbolize unity. Gake believes such a mural would make community members feel more accepted and welcome. Port Wentworth Council Approves MASA Center Site Plan, Extends Detention Facility Moratorium
The city council reviewed and approved the site plan for the MASA Center, a mixed-use development planned for the Main Street redevelopment downtown. The project will feature retail spaces on the ground floor and residential apartments on the upper levels. The former China House will be renovated into a restaurant with two additional retail bays and a rooftop seating and bar area. The dumpster location was clarified to be at the side of the building, on wheels, to allow for street access on trash days. The project received approval with the presented site plan, including the dumpster placement. Additionally, the council approved a resolution to extend the moratorium on the acceptance of applications for correctional detention facilities, penal institutions, or related agencies/facilities until October 31st. This extension aligns with the moratorium on mobile homes and manufactured homes, both of which are being updated for planning and zoning review.
Port Wentworth Announces Diverse July/August Events, Highlights Economic Impact of Sports and Entertainment Venues
The city manager presented upcoming events, including a 'Meet the Mayor' event on July 20th. A special promotion encourages attendance at a Savannah Steel basketball game, with a portion of ticket sales benefiting Habitat for Humanity. A neighborhood meeting is scheduled for July 29th regarding the site plan approval for a long-awaited daycare in Rice Hope. Also on July 29th, a blood drive will be held at City Hall. National Night Out is planned for August 4th at the downtown festival site. The Jazz Festival is scheduled for August 1st at the Vistar Pavilion, serving as a soft opening before the first full concert by Billy Currington. The city manager also noted that proceeds from a semi-pro football team's car show will go towards school supplies. Gulfstream Road will be closed on July 20th for an all-day event. The city anticipates significant economic impact from hockey tournaments, with 500-700 hotel rooms booked per event, leading to a potential renaissance for local hotels, restaurants, and retail. The Ice Cove and Amphitheater will host the Savannah Region Music Commission in September and the Savannah Region Sports Council in October, indicating the venue's growing recognition as an entertainment and sports destination.
Resident Questions CAT Funding, Cites Low Ridership and Rising Utility Costs
Isaac Wright questioned the use of reserves for the CAT (Coordinated Area Transportation Service) program, especially after a millage rate increase in 2024 intended to cover such costs. Wright stated that the city manager indicated the millage rate increase was for taxing districts like CAT. He noted that ridership numbers for CAT are very low, estimated at five or six people daily, making the potential million-dollar annual expense seem inefficient ($100,000 per rider). Wright suggested a referendum to gauge citizen support for a permanent tax for CAT and expressed concern over cumulative increases in utilities, trash, and water, which he believes are becoming a significant burden on citizens.
