The annexation process began in 2024 when the homeowners association sought cost-reduction alternatives. The city will now assume responsibility for maintaining the neighborhood's landscape and street lighting, funded through annual assessments at a lower cost to residents.
Local Pharmacy Owner Faces Regulatory Hurdles, Seeks Support
Mike Morsch spoke on behalf of Fireside Pharmacy owners Yeti and Yami, highlighting the extensive and burdensome regulatory oversight by the California Board of Pharmacy over the past year. He detailed how inspections, investigations, and corrective demands diverted significant resources from patient care. Morsch emphasized the pharmacy's unique role as a compounding pharmacy, creating personalized medications, which is not offered by larger pharmacies. He requested the California Board of Pharmacies to reduce restrictions, allowing the pharmacy to operate more effectively. Morsch also distributed a packet of information and requested council members to consider sending letters of support.
Palm Desert Accepts $160,800 Cannabis Tax Grant for DUI Enforcement Equipment
The council approved Item 13S, adopting a resolution authorizing the acceptance and administration of the cannabis tax fund grant for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The grant amounts to $160,800. Funds will be used to procure a truck for the city's DUI trailer, which was acquired last fiscal year. The discussion also touched upon Item 13N, an illicit cannabis response grant focused on education campaigns and school resource officer positions, which includes a significant educational component.
Desert Willows Weston Development Agreement Extended Six Months
The City Council approved the Fourth Amendment to the Development Agreement 96-1 with WBC Ranch Mirage Inc. (formerly Starwood) for the Desert Willows Weston project. This amendment extends the expiration date from August 2026 to February 2027 to allow time for finalizing updates to the performance schedule. No changes are proposed to land use, development intensity, site design, or existing entitlements. The project remains consistent with the general plan and regulations and was found exempt from CEQA. The Planning Commission recommended approval.
Resident Urges City to Address Safety Concerns on Hovely West
Dean Gaytons, a 19-year resident and former member of the Resource Preservation and Enhancement Committee, expressed excitement about the upcoming St. Jude Dream Home being built in Palm Desert. His primary concern, however, was the safety on Hovely West, which he described as an 'autobahn' with no enforced speed limit and no median. He recounted a recent incident where a car attempted to pass multiple vehicles. Gaytons urged the council to review Hovely West for the installation of a median to enhance neighborhood safety.
