City Council Approves 4% Increase in Solid Waste Collection Fees
The City Council discussed and approved an ordinance amending Chapter 98, Utilities, Article 3, Rates and Charges, Section 98-93, regarding solid waste collection fees. This amendment will implement a 4% increase in solid waste collection fees for residents, which is an annual adjustment passed on from the contractor, Waste Connections. The increase is expected to generate funds that support the general fund. The contract with Waste Connections is for five years, ending March 31, 2030, and the 4% annual increase was negotiated as a favorable rate compared to previous contracts that saw up to 8% increases. The current increase translates to a small amount, approximately 30-50 cents, for residential accounts.
City Council Adopts Updated Building Codes with Amendments
The City Council considered and approved an ordinance to adopt the 2021 international codes with amendments. This includes updates to the International Building Code, International Existing Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code, and International Property Maintenance Code. The amendments are primarily for updating and cleaning up language, ensuring alignment with city ordinances, and incorporating recommendations from the Council of Governments. The Building and Standards committee unanimously approved these proposed amendments. The energy conservation code was specifically excluded from adoption at this time.
