City Manager Reports on Land Auction and Upcoming Community Events
The City Manager reported on the upcoming auction of 9.366 acres of land near Lake Jacksonville on GovDeals.com, with 12 days remaining in the auction, a starting price of $61,000, and an estimated end date on a Saturday. He also announced upcoming community engagement events with law enforcement and firefighters: 'Coffee with the Cop' at McDonald's on July 21st, the annual 'Splash Day' with the fire department at Nichols Green on July 25th, and another 'Coffee with the Cop' at the JISD administrative building on July 31st.
Citywide Prayer Vigil Announced for July 23rd
During the open forum, a citywide prayer vigil was announced for Thursday, July 23rd, at 7 p.m. in Hazel Tilton Park. The vigil, organized by a group of citizens, aims to foster peace, hope, and unity in Jacksonville, with participation from local leaders including Pastor Medina. Final Plat Approved for Lake Springs Subdivision Lots
The City Council reviewed and approved the final plat for Blocks A, 1R, and 2R of the Lake Springs subdivision. The revised plats shift the property line slightly to the west, a change necessitated by a mechanical system that was straddling the original property line. This adjustment accounts for the placement of the mechanical system. The applicants for these lease-held lots were present, and the council's approval is a standard procedure for such land divisions.
City Council Approves Land Conveyance to Support Cancoil Expansion
The City Council approved a resolution in support of a project by the Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation (JEDCO) that may include the conveyance of approximately 5.28 acres of land to Cancoil. Cancoil, a business experiencing rapid growth, has requested this additional acreage to construct a second 150,000 square foot building to meet demand. The existing building is already insufficient for their current and future orders. The land conveyance will be performance-based, with a performance agreement including clawbacks if Cancoil fails to build. The goal is for Cancoil to be operational in the new building by September 1, with construction potentially starting by the end of FY27. The original development was a $30 million project, and this expansion could represent an additional $40 to $60 million in capital investment. The city's initial agreement with Cancoil included 12 acres of land valued at $20,000 per acre and a $600,000 employment grant, disbursed over five years based on job creation and wages. The current request is solely for the additional land.
Chili's Recognized for Community Contributions; Council Approves Consent Agenda Items
The City Council heard a presentation from JEDCO President Shane Page and Leroy Barfield, General Manager at Chili's, recognizing Chili's for their community support. Chili's hosts the Tomato Fest after-party and Chili Street Dance, blocking off their parking lot for the event. They also contribute to schools, partner with Saddler's Kitchens for a golf tournament, support the Chamber of Commerce, and the East Texas Peace Officer Association. The council also approved the consent agenda, which included the sale of surplus city items via GovDeals, the purchase of new playground equipment for Nichols Green Phase 1 (funded by grants from Game Time and JEDCO, city cash contributions, and in-kind costs), and the acceptance of a donation of a cargo trailer valued at $7,500 to the fire department from Billy Bateman, who is closing his Highway 69 mission.
