Overland Park Committee of the Whole Recommends Regional Pool Model Over Community Pools in Playbook OP Update

The Overland Park Committee of the Whole reviewed the Playbook OP, an update to the city's 2013 comprehensive park plan, with a particular focus on aquatics facilities. Three options for aquatics facility development were presented: Option 1 (Regional Pool Model), the staff's recommendation, which prioritizes maintaining and investing in existing regional pools and a future southern regional pool; Option 2 (Regional Plus Community Pool Model), the Playbook OP Steering Committee's recommendation, which includes renovating regional pools and adding two new community pools; and Option 3 (Alternative Plan), which prioritizes building a community pool at the Blue Jacket site over regional pool renovations. Following extensive discussion and public input, the committee voted to recommend Option 1, the regional pool model, as the path forward, citing financial sustainability and efficient use of taxpayer dollars. This decision was met with disappointment from some residents and council members who felt it did not align with community input gathered during the two-year planning process.
