Mayor Proclaims May as Poppy Month and June 5th as Gun Violence Awareness Day; Appointments to City Boards Approved
Mayor proclaimed May as poppy month in honor of the American Legion and June 5th as gun violence awareness day. The mayor also reappointed a slate of volunteers and appointed two new individuals to various city boards and commissions, including the planning commission, board of zoning appeals, code board of appeals, bicycle advisory board, and the downtown partnership. All appointments were approved by the council with a 7-0 vote. Council member Laurel Bertfield was absent, and council member Kurt Nappen participated remotely.
City Council Reviews 2027 Budget Proposals, Including Staff Increases and Departmental Allocations
The city council received initial budget presentations for the 2027 budget process. The proposed budget includes adding three new full-time positions: one in public works, one in community development, and one in the police department. Additionally, a three-quarters position in the parks and recreation department will be moved to full-time, increasing the city's total full-time staff to 361. The administration department's budget is projected to decrease from $10.3 million in 2026 to just under $8.9 million in 2027. The information technology department's budget will see a slight increase from $3.7 million to $3.8 million. The finance department's budget will increase from $1.4 million to $1.5 million. The parks and recreation department's budget will increase from just over $8 million to $8.3 million.
Shauny Police Department Approved for Mutual Aid Agreements for FIFA World Cup
The city council approved mutual aid agreements for the Shauny Police Department to provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies during the upcoming FIFA World Cup. These agreements allow the Shauny Police Department to lend assistance to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Prairie Village Police Department, Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, and Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. The agreements also cover the process for applying for and receiving reimbursement after the tournament.
