Master Plan Amendment Approved for Residential Rezoning on Locey Road
The City Council approved a rezoning application (AMP-03-2026) to amend the comprehensive master plan, changing the land use designation from employment to single-family medium for a property located on Locey Road, approximately 360 feet north of the northwest corner of East Tropical Parkway and Locey Road. This action supports the development of a new residential subdivision by Pulte Homes. The property, formerly planned for commercial use, is now being rezoned to align with surrounding residential development and the proposed housing project.
City Celebrates 80th Anniversary, Recognizes HOME Team Success, and Mourns Loss of Recreation Superintendent
The City Council recognized the city's 80th anniversary by promoting limited edition merchandise available at local libraries and online. Proceeds from these sales will support the Friends of the North Las Vegas Library District. The council also highlighted the work of the Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement Team (HOME Team), noting their success in assisting individuals experiencing homelessness by connecting them with resources like the navigation center. In May, the HOME Team served 261 individuals and connected 137 people to supportive services, showing an increase from April. Mixed-Use Development Approved for Former City Hall Site
The City Council approved a rezoning application (ZN-04-2026) and associated ordinance (3279) to reclassify 16.26 acres from R-A-PSP (Redevelopment Area Public/Semi-Public District) to a PUD (Planned Unit Development). This PUD will allow for a mix of commercial and multifamily residential uses on property located at the southeast corner of City Center Drive and North McDaniel Street. The development is planned to include two commercial buildings totaling at least 27,000 square feet and multifamily residential units, aiming for approximately 300 units. The site will also feature open space, recreation areas, and ball courts for residents. This project will redevelop a portion of the former city hall site.
Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update Presented to City Council
The City Council received a presentation on the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The plan, developed over several months with input from city staff, community stakeholders, and residents, aims to guide the city's parks and recreation initiatives for the next 10 years. Key findings from community engagement highlighted a strong demand for trails, pathways, land acquisition for parks, community and neighborhood parks, and arts and culture programming. Recommendations include a focus on outdoor connectivity, enhancing existing facilities, and considering future growth opportunities in new developments. The plan will also address operational and maintenance considerations for parks. The city's unique climate and abundance of water recreation opportunities were noted as factors influencing planning, particularly regarding water safety and drowning prevention, with July 25th recognized as World Drowning Prevention Day. The plan aims to balance existing needs with future growth, ensuring cohesive and lasting park and recreation services.
Resident Raises Concerns About Speeding and Racing Enforcement
During the second public forum, a resident, Terry Maria, inquired about the enforcement of speeding and racing on his street. He stated that the city has radar equipment to record such activity and has discussed the issue with Public Works directors, who acknowledged the problem. However, the resident expressed concern that the issue persists and asked what measures would be taken to enforce the law, especially with school set to start soon. He requested to speak with Mayor Pro Tem Scott Black regarding discussions with Republic Services.
