Jason Way Parking Issue Resolved; Illegal Apartments Vacated After Council Visit
Mayor Franci and Councilman Fitzhenry visited residents on Jason Way regarding a parking situation. Following this visit, two apartments that were reportedly not supposed to be there were vacated, and associated items were placed at the curb. This outcome was viewed positively by a resident who reported it.
Cannabis Retailer Ordinance Path Forward; 9 Perrine Avenue Redevelopment Agreement Tabled
The Mayor and Council discussed ordinance 2464, concerning the potential introduction of one Class 5 cannabis retailer. The ordinance requires planning board review before introduction. Councilwoman Sheedy emphasized that the ordinance must be in final form for the planning board's review. The sequence involves the ordinance going to the planning board for comments, followed by the borough's response, before it can be formally introduced. The planning board's role is to assess consistency with the master plan. Separately, ordinance 2462, related to a financial agreement for the 9 Perrine Avenue redevelopment, was temporarily removed from the agenda pending discussions in executive session regarding litigation and financial matters.
Emergency Sewer Repairs Authorized for Rutherford Place; Narda Pump Station Monitored
The council is authorizing an emergency contract with Joseph M. Sanzari Incorporated for the repair of sanitary sewers along Rutherford Place. The issue was initially identified on July 4th due to a sewer backup behind houses along Rutherford Place and adjacent to Holy Cross Cemetery. The contractor will perform CCTV inspection, jetting, and cleaning of the sewer line. If the blockage cannot be repaired, rerouting the sewer from the corner of Holy Cross Cemetery down to Argyle Place will be considered. The project also involves lining the entire sewer to prevent infiltration and holes. There is also an ongoing monitoring of the Narda Pump Station, which is currently stable but will undergo evaluation for gate valve replacement and other necessary work.
Community Programs Update: Blood Drive, Summer Safety Program, and Tick Awareness
Councilwoman Sheehy provided updates on various community initiatives. The Board of Health is organizing a blood drive on July 13th at the senior center, and SNAP will be available on July 14th. The summer recreation program has started, offering indoor activities due to rain, and introducing a new 'Summer Safety' program in partnership with the Bergen County Health Department, covering tick and mosquito education, sun safety, hydration, and water safety. She also noted the increasing concern regarding ticks, citing personal experience. Registration for the camp is still open. The ongoing issue of ticks was highlighted, with an example of children returning from hiking with ticks, underscoring the importance of awareness and checks, especially with deer prevalent in the area.
