Township Secures Grants for Collins House and Oakside Restoration Projects

Additionally, a New Jersey Historic Trust capital grant of $435,660 (with a one-to-one matching component) has been awarded for the restoration of the roof and gutters at Oakside. Connolly and Hickey will also provide professional services for the Oakside project, with a contract not to exceed $38,820, to be paid from a specific Oakside capital account.
Bloomfield Adopts Community Forest Management Plan for Enhanced Tree Care
The township is implementing a Community Forest Management Plan to guide tree management over the next five years. The plan emphasizes proactive, responsible, and fiscally sound management, covering inspections, maintenance, planting, training, and long-term planning to comply with state programs and secure grant funding. The plan identifies nearly 3,100 public trees and aims to expand the tree population by addressing planting location constraints and integrating tree planting into street repaving and streetscape projects. It also focuses on training, reinforcing ordinances, resource management (including hazardous tree removal), community engagement, and disaster preparedness. The DPW has increased tree planting efforts, with plans for further expansion and additional tree crews.
Bloomfield Addresses Rodent Concerns and Clarifies Firefighter Termination Following Racial Harassment Incident
The township is taking steps to address rodent issues, including distributing new garbage cans and discussing the previous rat program. Residents expressed concerns about the ongoing rat problem, citing sightings and damage, and questioned the town's plan and the absence of a formal rodent program. The health department stated that property owners are responsible for addressing issues on their own land, but the township is considering an update on mitigation efforts. Concerns were also raised about potential rat migration from the South Junior Middle School property if it is demolished without fumigation. Separately, the township is discussing the incident involving former firefighter Walter Coffey, who was terminated in December 2025 following a racial harassment incident where he displayed a noose to a Black firefighter. The mayor clarified the legal timeline and disciplinary process, emphasizing zero tolerance for racist conduct and confirming Coffey's termination after criminal proceedings concluded.
Bloomfield Human Services Awarded $117,500 Grant for Resident Assistance
Human Services received a $117,500 grant to assist residents with back rent, security deposits, utility assistance, and case management. This funding also helps offset current salaries for case management staff. This is the second rental assistance grant this year, following a previous $70,000 grant that has been expended. Separately, the Neighbor to Neighbor Board received another $50,000 grant, which was used to help victims of recent fires and a partial roof collapse. This grant, combined with a previous one, brings the total funding from Partners for Health to $100,000 and can be used for undocumented residents.
Bloomfield Addresses Pedestrian Button Disablement and Plans Stop Sign Installation
The township is addressing accessibility issues related to pedestrian safety. The ADA push buttons at the intersection of Conger, Glenwood, and Lackawanna Plaza have been purposefully disabled by the county for safety reasons related to bus turns, not because they are broken. The council is seeking information on the study that led to this decision and the possibility of returning to use. Separately, a stop sign will be installed at Crown Street and Westbound at Lake Street to improve public safety.
