City Council Reviews June Financials and Approves Investment Summary
The city council reviewed financial expenditures and revenues for the general fund as of June 30th, 2026. Expenditures were at 56% overall, with specific departments like the library at 91% and industrial at 34%. Revenues were also reviewed, with the county retail sales tax at 51% and interest on investments on target. The council also approved the investment summary report for the quarter ending June 30th, 2026, detailing CD investments, money market investments, and cash on hand, totaling $37,036,205.55.
Community Events Approved; Nuisance Property Abated
The McPherson Public Library requested to host 'Art in the Park' again this year, a local vendor event that previously attracted around 30 vendors and 150 attendees. The July 4th celebration, rescheduled to July 5th due to weather, drew an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 attendees to Wall Park for activities and fireworks. The event was supported by various city departments and sponsors, including CHS for fireworks and the Intrepid Brass Band. A property at 522 North Cedar was addressed for nuisance abatement, involving the removal of two dead trees overhanging a neighbor's property and mowing weeds, with costs not to exceed $1,725, to be invoiced to the property owner.
City to Seek CDBG Funding for City-Wide Home Repairs
The city is planning to apply for another round of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for home repairs. Previously, these funds were restricted to specific areas, but the state has removed this requirement, allowing applications for the entire city. While previously repaired properties cannot be re-repaired, there are no other location restrictions. An informational meeting for residents will be held on Tuesday at 5:30 PM to provide more details and allow for pre-application submissions, which can help improve the city's chances of receiving the grant funding.
Police Department Welcomes New Officer Kara Thompson
The Police Department introduced a new officer, Kara Thompson, who joined the force on Monday. She will be attending the academy on August 10th and then entering the FTO program. The Chief noted that recruiting for law enforcement is increasingly difficult and highlighted the department's efforts to attract candidates from various sources.
Countryside Rebuild Project Nearing Completion; Water Main Replacement Continues
The BPU electric group is continuing work on the countryside rebuild project, which involves setting new poles and stringing conductor. The project is complex and has grown in scope, with completion estimated in six to eight weeks, including reseeding and dirt work. The underground crew is working on an overhead to underground conversion in the Grand and Hardup area. For water services, main replacement on Ash Street is ongoing, reaching Avenue A, with plans to bore under Avenue A next week and continue south. The BPU also discussed a prior informational panel on data centers and comprehensive planning, noting that such projects can be managed successfully with open dialogue.
