City Commission Approves Conditional Use and Site Plan for 7 Brew Drive-Through Coffee
The City Commission considered a conditional use application and a major site plan application for '7 Brew Drive-Through Coffee'. The conditional use application, LDA 26-03, sought to allow for the operation of a drive-through in the town center zoning district. The accompanying major site plan application, LDA 2613, was for the construction of a new drive-through retail coffee shop. The Planning and Zoning Board had previously recommended approval for both applications. The commission, after waiving the formalities of a quasi-judicial proceeding with consent from staff and the applicant, reviewed the applications. Staff found the proposed use to be consistent with the comprehensive plan, not detrimental to public welfare, consistent with community character, and that adequate utility and roadway capacity exists. The site plan also met all required standards for setbacks, building height, plot coverage, landscaping, parking, and signage, often exceeding the city's code requirements. The commission approved Resolution 2026-078 and Resolution 2026-079 with conditions.
City Commission Approves Density Increase, Title VI Plan, Parks Fee Structure, and New Drive-Through Coffee Shop
The City Commission reviewed and approved minutes from previous meetings. They also addressed several resolutions and ordinances. Key among these were the approval of Ordinance 2026-004 to increase maximum residential density, Resolution 2026-076 approving the City's Title VI Plan, and Resolution 2026-077 approving revisions to the Parks and Human Services Facility Usage and Fee Structure Policy, which was amended to include government agencies and affiliated organizations. Finally, Resolution 2026-078 and 2026-079 were approved, allowing for the establishment of a 7 Brew Drive-Through Coffee shop after a public hearing and quasi-judicial proceeding. The meeting also included reports from the Mayor, Vice Mayor, City Attorney, Sheriff's Office Captain, and Fire Rescue Chief, covering various city initiatives, public safety statistics, community programs, and upcoming events.
City Highlights Library Programs, Community Projects, and Public Safety Initiatives
The City Commission discussed several community-focused initiatives and acknowledged various community members and organizations. Former Commissioner Beverly Williams introduced Alina de la Varreira, the new branch manager of the Lauderdale Lakes Branch Library, who highlighted the library's role in lifelong learning and community connection, and plans to expand STEM and technology programming for youth. The library also hosted a 'Lost Art of Hand Quilting' class and is planning future STEM and robotics classes. The 'Born on Purpose Project', a nonprofit with a mentorship program for aspiring law enforcement and first responders, was highlighted for its work. Commissioner Maxwell-Williams provided immigration information regarding TPS work permits and citizenship applications, and announced upcoming literacy events. The City's 'We Care Associates Group' was recognized as the July Business Spotlight. Public works projects, including citywide traffic components, park improvements, and drainage enhancements, are underway. The city's 2025 annual audit is complete, and fiscal year 2027 budget development is in progress.
City Commission Approves Amendment to Increase Maximum Residential Density to 50 Units Per Acre
The City Commission considered an ordinance to amend the city's land development regulations to establish consistency with the city's comprehensive plan regarding maximum residential density. This amendment aims to establish a maximum residential density of 50 dwelling units per acre in applicable zoning districts, aligning with the future land use plan element of the comprehensive plan. This action was taken to comply with the state's Live Local Act, which requires municipalities to authorize qualified multifamily and mixed-use residential development. Previously, the land development regulations only allowed for 25 dwelling units per acre, creating an inconsistency with the comprehensive plan which supported up to 50 dwelling units per acre. The ordinance was approved by the commission.
Lauderdale Lakes Sees 9% Crime Decrease; Sheriff's Office Recognizes Outstanding Deputies and Explorer Program Success
Captain Phillips of the Broward Sheriff's Office reported on law enforcement activities in Lauderdale Lakes for June. Overall crime decreased by 9%. Officers responded to 2,779 calls for service, made 77 arrests, issued 536 citations, and had 59 citizen contacts. Deputy Nicolae Morgan was recognized as Star of the Month for his exceptional actions in disarming an armed individual during a sexual battery investigation and for successfully directing four burglary suspects into custody. Detective Rivera and Deputy Baltazar were commended for their proactive work during Operation Midnight Heat, leading to the arrest of an individual wanted for murder. The Lauderdale Lakes Explorers Post achieved success at the Florida Sheriff's Explorer Association State Conference, earning second place in a shooting competition and third place in a crisis intervention scenario, highlighting the program's effectiveness in developing young people's skills.
