Town Council Adopts Traffic Calming Ordinance, Clarifies E-bike Regulations
The Town Council adopted Ordinance 2026-3, which establishes a policy and procedure for the installation of traffic calming devices, such as speed humps and speed bumps. This ordinance aims to address excessive vehicle speeds on residential streets to enhance public safety by creating a uniform, objective, and transparent process for evaluating requests for these measures. The council indicated that the policy would lead to installation in very few specific locations, citing potential issues on a street north of J Street and Griffith Boulevard, subject to investigation and police chief recommendation. Separately, a discussion clarified existing ordinances regarding e-bikes and motorized scooters, stating they are treated the same as bicycles under state law and prohibited from riding on sidewalks in Central Park, adjacent sidewalks, and the downtown business district, with limitations also on Central Park and Tat Park. The council acknowledged that while e-bikes can reach 25 mph, current state law prevents their prohibition without also affecting regular bicycles on sidewalks.
