City Council Approves Funding for Advanced Police Vehicle Fleet Upgrade
The council approved CPO 2026-17, which appropriates funds for the police department's vehicle replacement program. This program, a partnership with Hard Rock Casino, involves a multi-year commitment where Hard Rock and the city match funds to replace police vehicles annually. This ordinance allows for the acquisition and equipping of the next set of vehicles. The new vehicles are significantly advanced, featuring mobile data terminals, e-ticket readers, in-car cameras, front and rear-facing radar, license plate readers, and secure cages. The Deputy Chief highlighted the importance of these vehicles as mobile offices for officers and their role in accessing city-wide camera systems for real-time crime monitoring, which has proven more effective than Shot Spotter technology. The discussion also touched upon Hard Rock Casino's ongoing appeal of its property tax assessment and the non-taxable status of the new convention center.
Finance Department Salary Budget Revised to Add Executive Administrative Assistant
The council approved CPO 2026-18, which revises the finance department's salary budget to hire an Executive Administrative Assistant. This position is crucial for managing administrative duties, improving efficiency, and ensuring accurate financial reporting and a clean audit. The role will convert a previously approved Financial Coordinator position to Executive Administrative Assistant, with the salary set below the lowest paid existing staff member (revenue clerk) to ensure fairness. The move aims to free up other finance staff to focus on their core responsibilities such as revenue, procurement, and purchasing.
