Resident Raises Concerns Over NIPCO Power Outages, Seeks Council Intervention
Joe Alazeni, a resident with expertise in electrical power, presented concerns about NIPCO power outages to Councilmember Tom Schmidt and the council. He requested the town council's assistance due to their greater authority and influence.
Firefighters Union Urges Council to Negotiate Collective Bargaining Agreement
During the town council meeting, Jacob Thornton, president of IFFF Local 4279, addressed the council regarding collective bargaining for firefighters and paramedics. He commended the council's previous resolution supporting United Steelworkers Local 7-1 and urged them to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the Sherville firefighters. Thornton highlighted that the firefighters have served for 23 years without a contract, focusing on higher standards, safer working environments, and improved recruitment/retention. He emphasized the importance of experienced professionals in maintaining safe operations, aligning with the principles in the council's prior resolution. Steven Mchuk, president of the Northern Indiana Area Labor Federation, and Brian Suns, president of Hobart Professional Firefighters Local, also spoke in support of a collective bargaining agreement, stressing the need to take care of public safety personnel and provide them with the same rights as other workers. The speakers urged the council to demonstrate their commitment to labor by negotiating a fair contract with their own firefighters.
Seven Brew Coffee Approved for Redevelopment at Former Wendy's Location
The town council considered a variance of use to allow a drive-in establishment with drive-through lanes at 990 US Highway 41, formerly Wendy's Hamburgers, to be redeveloped as a Seven Brew coffee shop. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) had recommended approval. The proposal includes demolishing the existing Wendy's building and constructing a new Seven Brew prototype building with dual drive-through lanes and a pass-through lane. The southwest entrance to the property will be closed as a condition of approval. The project aims to generate revenue for the town and revitalize a vacant property. The council approved the variance with the condition that the southwest entrance be closed.
Digital Billboard Variance Denied Due to Zoning Concerns
The town council considered a variance of use to allow a 14'x28' double-sided digital billboard with an overall height of 44 feet at 2321 Wicker Avenue in the East Horizon subdivision. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) had recommended an unfavorable recommendation (5-0) due to concerns about the location and light emission into the adjacent subdivision, as well as an existing sign 500 feet to the north. The petitioner, Robertson Outdoor, presented the billboard as a community development tool, highlighting its ability to display emergency alerts, Amber alerts, and public service announcements at no cost to the city. Despite the petitioner's arguments and the company's safety features, council members expressed concern about opening a "can of worms" by allowing another digital billboard, citing the town's ordinance and the potential for numerous similar requests. The motion to deny the variance passed 5-0.
Lamar Advertising Billboard Relocation Approved with Variance
The council reviewed a variance of use request for Lamar Advertising to relocate an existing 10'x5' x 36' off-premises advertising structure 125 feet to the east. The proposed location is at 5050 West Lincoln Highway on the Christen Living Trust property (Earl's Heating and Air Conditioning). The variance requires a zero setback on side and front yards with an overall height of 48 feet. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) recommended approval. Concerns were raised by council members regarding the zero setback, potential obtrusiveness, and its proximity to the town sign and neighboring properties. The BZA's favorable recommendation was incorporated into the motion. The motion to approve carried 5-0.
