Public Safety Report Shows Increase in Part One Crimes Driven by Vehicle Thefts, but Overall Crime Down Significantly Since 2021
Director Larry Brasita presented the Public Safety Department's year-to-date update. Part one crimes are up 15.5% compared to the previous year, primarily driven by vehicle-related crimes like catalytic converter thefts. Special operations have been implemented to address high crime trend areas, and the department is leveraging camera systems and neighborhood canvassing. Despite the recent uptick, overall crime rates are down 29.6% compared to 2021. The department is continuing riverbed operations, working with schools on traffic enforcement, and initiating a neighborhood watch campaign with upcoming events in Mesa and Red Top areas.
Mayor's Youth Council Update Highlights Member Impact and Encourages New Applications
Victoria Ramirez, representing the Mayor's Youth Council, provided an update on the council's activities. The scholarship application period has closed and is under review, while applications for new members are now open. Ramirez shared her personal experience, highlighting the positive impact the council had on her leadership skills, confidence, and community involvement. She encouraged other youth to join, emphasizing the benefits of gaining leadership skills, volunteer experience, and the opportunity to voice youth concerns, which also looks good for college and future jobs. Ramirez concluded by thanking the council for their support.
City Council Approves Art Selections for Route 66 Themed Utility Box Project
Albert Nunez, Management Analyst, presented the selection of artwork for the 2025 Call for Artists, focusing on the theme 'Duarte's Past, Present, and Future' related to Route 66. The city received 81 applications and selected finalist designs for traffic controllers, meter pedestals, and irrigation control boxes. The council reviewed and voted on designs for various locations. The proposal includes using non-selected finalist artwork for remaining utility box locations, with an estimated cost of $22,000. The council also revisited location #2 and selected the Tongva tribe design, and addressed location #10 and #12 after some deliberation. Finally, the council approved the recommended action for the art installations.
Parks and Recreation Summer Events Registration Open, City News Available, and World Cup Viewing Party Announced
Andres Rangel, Assistant to the City Manager, provided several announcements. Registration for Parks and Recreation Summer Events and Activities is now open on the city's website. The summer 2026 edition of 'City News' is available online and has been delivered to households. A World Cup viewing party for the Team USA Sabut versus Padawai game will be held on Friday, June 12th at Duarte Sports Park, with pre-game activities starting at 5 PM and the live broadcast at 6 PM; admission is free.
City Council Reconsiders and Adopts Objective Design Standards Resolution with Edits
During the discussion of objective design standards, City Attorney Ty Vet Vin requested a reconsideration of business item 17A due to necessary edits to the resolution (26-17). The edits involved changing 'public hearing' to 'public meeting' in several places within the resolution document. A motion to reconsider was made and seconded, followed by a motion to adopt the resolution with the specified edits. The motion carried.
