West Avenue Beautification and Sarasota Business Parkway Projects Progressing
Councilmember Washington reported on the West Avenue beautification project, stating that engineering consultants are working on final construction plans and the project is expected to be bid out by late summer with construction beginning in the fall. Additionally, the Sarasota Business Parkway or P3 project will be substantially completed next week with the installation of stained poles and overhead signage.
Senior Living Facility Rezoning Approved for 1080 Sigmund Road
The Mayor and Council considered a rezoning request for 12.49 acres at 1080 Sigmund Road, changing the zoning from Industrial Distribution District to Office Institutional District. The applicant, Pivotal Development LLC, plans to develop a 148-unit senior living facility. The Planning Commission recommended approval with six conditions, and the council discussed adding a seventh condition regarding canopy coverage. The council ultimately approved the rezoning with seven conditions.
Horse Park, Big Haynes Creek, and Golf Course Updates Highlight Recent Activities and Improvements
The Horse Park hosted a successful quarter horse show with over 1,500 competitors and 500 horses from 16 states, involving 28 catered events. Upcoming events include a youth dressage challenge and the Snap and Shoals annual meeting. Big Haynes Creek has seen improvements to its pollinator garden, sunflower garden, and new interpretive signs. The golf course greens were aerified and sanded to improve root systems and playing quality.
City HR and Accounting Updates: Wellness Program Launched, GFOA Conference Attended
On the HR front, benefit open enrollment concluded successfully, with some employees switching to new plans. A new wellness program was launched to help employees reduce costs and stay healthier. Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) to Appear on November Ballot
The council approved an intergovernmental agreement with Rockdale County for the imposition of a floating homestead local option sales tax (SPLOST), allowing it to be placed on the November ballot for citizen consideration. The agreement outlines revenue division and collection, and the tax is intended to offset property taxes.
