The presentation included recognition of specific firefighters and police officers involved in rescuing a victim from a tree that fell on a house and ruptured a gas line. Another incident involving an active basement fire that extended to the first floor was also described. Bert thanked all city departments for their collaborative efforts during the storm.
Cal City to Launch Domestic Violence Task Force Following Significant Reduction in Countywide Incidents
Alderman Nelson, reporting on the Health, Education, and Welfare committee, congratulated Cal City for hosting the Chicago Cook County Domestic Violence Task Force meeting. She shared findings that approximately 72,000 warrants are outstanding in Cook County, with 14,000 involving domestic violence charges. She highlighted the impact on victims and survivors left in limbo due to unserved warrants. Nelson noted a 53% reduction in domestic violence in six months due to the task force's work. She announced plans to initiate a domestic violence task force in Cal City for Phase 2 in the fall. Nelson thanked various individuals and organizations involved, including Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller and Alderwoman Tabaris.
Resident Raises Concerns About Animal Pests, Warehouse Roof Safety, and Property Maintenance
Leonard Wizwire addressed the council regarding several concerns in his neighborhood. He inquired about the status of 778 Burnham, a property with animals, noting an increase in pests. He also expressed concern about sheet metal on the roof of a warehouse south of his house potentially causing damage in high winds. Wizwire also highlighted the unkempt appearance of a property at 784 Burnham due to overgrown bushes. He mentioned a car lot/mechanical shop at Burnham and 156th Street using a city lot as a parking area and questioned the condition of the property at 778 Burnham, given the recent rainfall.
Questions Arise Over Professional Services Billing for Farnsworth Project; Item Tabled
During the discussion of financial matters, Alderman Wilson questioned item 13 (Farnsworth), specifically the billing for professional services totaling $42,000 and $62,000, noting a lack of detail about what these services entailed. She expressed concern about paying large sums without clear outcomes. It was clarified that the item is 100% reimbursable and that DCO approved all items. The previous billing was $13,000 + $13,000 = $26,000 total earned. Wilson moved to table the item to get further questions answered.
