City to Dispose of Surplus Library Equipment

F84F Fighter Plane to be Installed as Veterans Park Monument
The city is planning to install an F84F fighter plane as a monument in the veterans park area. The plane, donated by the Southern Museum of Flights, will be refurbished, painted, and mounted approximately 10 feet in the air on an angle to simulate flight. A QR code will be placed at the site to provide historical information about the plane. The project is estimated to cost $300,000 after refurbishment. Additionally, Columbia High School's aviation class will be involved in the project, and there are discussions about city personnel attending the class. Engineering for the plane's mounting is set to begin with a contract for $15,500, and the project is anticipated to be completed in time for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Veterans Day.
City Pursues New Retail and Restaurant Businesses
The city is actively seeking to attract new retail shops and restaurants. Mr. Rousey has been tasked with this initiative, and a letter has been prepared for delivery to Mo Barbecue to encourage their establishment in the downtown area. The council has approved the hiring of Mr. Rousey to lead these business recruitment efforts. In his first week, he has already identified a potential lead.
City Council Approves Ordinance Allowing Alcohol at Special Events on City Property
Ordinance number 2026-08 was adopted, which amends Ordinance number 202502 and section 10-8 of the city code. This ordinance allows the council to approve special events and permit alcoholic beverages at such events on city property, including parks and other facilities. This measure is intended to align with the upcoming National event in August. Unanimous consent was granted for its adoption.
