Birmingham City Council Sets Public Hearing for Zoning Map Amendment

Tammy Smith addressed the council regarding safety concerns in her neighborhood, specifically high traffic speeds and dangerous right-of-way conditions due to overgrown vegetation. She requested the installation of speed bumps to mitigate speeding and asked for the overgrown right-of-way to be cut back. She also reported a hazardous city-owned tree in front of her house whose branches are falling, posing a risk. Ansley Resident Demands Action on Infrastructure, Lack of Services, and Community Engagement
Robert Banks spoke on behalf of the citizens of Ansley, highlighting issues such as unpaved roads, overgrown grass, and inadequate park maintenance. He emphasized the critical lack of a certified grocery store in Ansley and the need for better businesses in the area, stating that despite events like 'Blossom on the Block', Ansley is not flourishing. Banks called for collaboration between counselors and citizens, urging them to stop forming 'fake coalitions' and instead work within the community to address violence and engage with youth. He criticized the lack of action on potholes and the disconnect between community events and the reality on the ground, advocating for a vibrant, understanding community and genuine cooperation.
Block and Bloom Event Success, Pool Hours Extended, Community Survey Ongoing
Councilor Smith announced the Block and Bloom Block Party, a community event in Inslee co-hosted with Flourish Alabama, thanking sponsors and fellow counselors for their support. She also reminded residents about the ongoing citywide community survey by Parks and Recreation and announced that pools will extend their hours to include Sundays through Labor Day, with pools opening on Saturdays and Sundays starting in August. Aqua Aerobics at McAlpine on Wednesdays will continue.
Senior Resident Appeals for City Assistance with Overgrown Properties and Junkyard Conditions
Arlen Belcher, nearly 80 years old, reported issues with overgrown grass and trees on both sides of his property, stating the city has not maintained these areas for about three years. He expressed difficulty in managing the overgrown conditions on a fixed income and mentioned that his house has had to be pressure washed multiple times due to falling limbs. He requested the city reconsider maintaining the lot and help him address the overgrown vegetation and parked cars with no tags, which he described as looking like a junkyard.
