The equipment is needed for cleaning sewer mains, manholes, and stormwater infrastructure, as well as for hydro excavation. Concerns were raised about the proposed financing rate of 5.89% compared to other available options, and the council requested further information on alternative financing before making a final decision.
City Awarded $250,000 Safety Action Plan Grant for Roadway Improvements
The city has been awarded the Fiscal Year 2026 LMIG Safety Action Plan (SAP) Grant for $250,000. This grant requires a 30% local match and will be used for traffic calming measures, signage, pavement markings, and other low-cost roadway safety improvements to reduce crashes and enhance safety on local streets.
Drainage and Sewer Flow Issues Reported in Multiple Locations
Multiple council members raised concerns about drainage issues. Specifically, a stopped-up drain at 1050 MLK, near the old Smicky's, was highlighted. Additionally, a report indicated a sewer line flowing into a subdivision during road construction at Washington Middle School, which is anticipated to cause flooding.
Cairo Grady Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade Permit Approved
The council approved the parade permit for the Cairo Grady Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade. The parade route remains unchanged, and organizers will continue to emphasize the importance of not throwing candy from floats due to safety concerns, encouraging hand-outs instead.
Road Maintenance and Mowing Needs Highlighted Across Several Streets
Council members reported on road maintenance and mowing needs. Specific areas mentioned include Alton Hall Roads and 20th Street, where mowing is required. Additionally, items need to be cleared from the right-of-way on 20th Street before further work can be done. The need for the sidearm mower on Buchanan was also noted.
