Community Members Voice Concerns Over Fire Company Status and Public Safety
Multiple speakers addressed the council regarding the potential closure or merger of fire companies, particularly Newportville Fire Company. Jim Mahan, with 70 years in fire service, emphasized membership decline as the primary issue and urged collaboration. Don Cummings, battalion chief of Newportville, presented documents showing prior merger agreements and communication issues. Ryan Cummings, deputy chief of Newportville, highlighted recent improvements in response times and financial controls, questioning the justification for closure. Frank Barnhart, a paramedic, stated closing stations would increase response times and advocated for a fully staffed, 24/7 paid fire department. Colin Sweeney, lieutenant of Newportville, expressed concern over response times and morale if the company closes. David Sergeant spoke in support of Newportville, emphasizing the importance of nearby fire companies.
Bristol Township Council Approves Consent Agenda and Financial Vouchers
The council approved the consent agenda, which included the voucher list and requisition dated July 16, 2026, for $2,313,214.95, and the minutes from the June 18, 2026, council meeting.
Bristol Township Declares Blighted Property on Tmont Street
Bo Fleming, the building and planning supervisor, presented a blight case for 5606 Tmont Street in Bristol. The property, owned by Better Homes Bucks County since 1988, is subdivided into two vacant homes (5606 and 5608). The blight code enforcement letter was issued in August 2025 with no owner contact since. Home 5608 was damaged by fire, and utilities are disabled. Both homes are considered uninhabitable. The council passed a resolution declaring the property blighted in accordance with the urban redevelopment law.
Township Authorizes Sale of Surplus Police Vehicles
The council authorized the sale of surplus vehicles, specifically ten former police vehicles, through bidding. A resolution was passed to facilitate this sale.
Collection Agency Agreement Approved for Red Light Enforcement Violations
The council approved entering into an agreement with a collection agency for unpaid violations from the automated red light enforcement program. The township currently has cameras at two intersections, operating for about a year and six months respectively. This agreement aims to collect unpaid fines from individuals who have not paid their violations.
