Mayor Highlights Upcoming Blessing of the Waters and Thanks Forestry Volunteers
Mayor Vado announced the Blessing of the Waters event on June 28th at 3 p.m. at the waterfall park (intersection of Pope and Chadam). He thanked the Blue Island Forestry Board and volunteers for their work on plantings along Western Avenue and in the business district, noting the addition of approximately 200 flower pots.
Council Approves Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Lead Service Line Replacement Project Bid
The council approved payroll for May 22nd, 2026, totaling $484,837.31. They also approved account payables dated May 27th, 2026, amounting to $585,950.23. A motion to approve the bid for the 2026 Lead Service Line Replacement Project Phase 1 in the amount of $1,442,156 to Millennium Contracting Company, identified as the lowest responsible bidder, was also passed.
Mission Covenant Church Announces June Event Schedule
Ali Clement, a resident and member of Mission Covenant Church, shared details about four upcoming June events hosted by the church: Movie Night on June 12th (6-10 p.m.), a Free Community Wellness Event on June 20th (12-5 p.m.) offering health resources and family fun, a Father's Day service and dinner on June 21st, and a Motorcycle Blessing on June 28th (10:30 a.m.). Clement offered to forward flyers for these events.
20th Annual Blessing of the River Ceremony Announced
Tom Shepard invited the council and citizens to the 20th anniversary of the Blessing of the River/Waters ceremony on June 28th at 3 p.m. at the Calumet channel waterfall. He highlighted the event's purpose to honor and pray for the healing of the environment, particularly water resources. The event will feature music by the Mudcats and refreshments, with participation from Blue Cap and the Progress Center for folks with disabilities. Shepard also noted recent accessibility improvements made by the MWRD at the waterfall site.
Administrator Praises New Police Leadership, Thanks Outgoing Commander
The City Administrator congratulated Police Chief Jason Slattery and Deputy Chief Matt Walsh, expressing confidence in their leadership. He also thanked Commander Sepy for his work over the past year, effectively handling multiple administrative roles. The administrator is excited about the new leadership team's potential to bring about regeneration and a stronger police department.
