Conservation Board Proposes Town Pursue Tree City USA Designation
Charlotte Cabelli of the Conservation Board presented the Tree City USA program, a designation by the Arbor Day Foundation recognizing communities committed to tree resource planning and management. The program focuses on trees on town property and requires minimal additional cost. Becoming a Tree City aims to inspire tree planting and care, making the town stronger, greener, and more vibrant. The presentation outlined the four standards for Tree City status: establishing an active tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, demonstrating a minimum of $2 per capita annual expenditure on tree care, and an Arbor Day observance. The Conservation Board expressed willingness to contribute to several standards, including drafting ordinance language and organizing events, while town staff would handle expenditure documentation. Several community groups have expressed interest in supporting the initiative. The town is also aligning this program with its Comprehensive Plan, which includes goals for climate resiliency and enhancing green infrastructure.
Town Proposes Updates to Vehicle and Traffic Regulations, Including No Stopping on T-Bore Road and New Stop Signs
The Town Engineer presented proposed changes to Chapter 320 of the town code regarding vehicle and traffic regulations. These changes include no stopping, standing, or parking on T-Bore Road between Basket Road and Fairlife truck access to prevent overnight parking and impede traffic flow due to its narrow width and limited shoulders. Additionally, new stop sign controls will be implemented on the minor approaches of intersections resulting from residential developments. Protected left turn lanes will be established at various intersections along Bay Road as part of its road diet project, converting a four-lane section to a three-lane section with a center turn lane. These changes aim to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents.
Town Establishes Process for Disability Signage
The Town Engineer presented a proposed process for implementing disability signage, inspired by a similar program in Buffalo. The process requires a completed application and a doctor's note verifying the disability. To qualify for a sign, the child must be under 18, the street must have less than 2,000 vehicles per day, the speed limit must be 35 mph or less, and the roadway must be residential in nature. Applicants must re-certify annually. The town is exploring various methods to inform parents about this program, including the town website, newsletters, and potentially partnering with the school district. The Highway Department will be responsible for sign installation, and the cost per sign is currently unknown but expected to be standard.
