Weatherford City Council Approves New Regulations for Precious Metal and Gem Dealers
The City of Weatherford adopted Ordinance 02026-24, establishing Chapter 16 of the City Code for precious metal and gem dealers. This ordinance introduces permitting, registration, reporting, and record-keeping requirements for these businesses operating within the city. The purpose is to enhance the investigation of property crimes, aid in the recovery of stolen property, and protect both legitimate businesses and citizens. The ordinance requires permanent and temporary dealers to obtain a city permit, verify seller identification, electronically report transactions, photograph purchases, and maintain records. This measure is distinct from the regulation of pawn shops, which are governed by the Texas Pawn Shop Act. The city plans to implement an electronic reporting system and is considering fee structures for local businesses at a later date, with an emphasis on not burdening existing businesses.
City Manager James Hotop Nominated for Texas Municipal League Risk Pool Board
The City Council considered nominations for the Texas Municipal League (TML) Intergovernmental Risk Pool Board of Directors. The TML, established in 1913, is an advocacy group for local governments, and its Intergovernmental Risk Pool, created in 1973, provides insurance and risk management services (workers' compensation, property, liability, cyber liability, and automobile coverage) to cities. The pool is managed by a 15-member board, with 12 elected by pool members serving staggered six-year terms. Two nomination places (one and four) were available. City Manager James Hotop was nominated for Place Four, with a motion made by the Mayor and seconded by Matt Tiscus. The nomination passed unanimously.
Weatherford City Council Approves Construction Contract for Development Services and Parks Admin Office Renovation
The City Council considered authorizing the City Manager to execute a construction contract with DRI Construction for the Development Services and Parks Administration Administrative Office Renovation Project. The contract, utilizing the interlocal purchasing system (TIPS) Contract number 230-10402, is for $503,986. This phase of the project includes building an expansion, re-roofing the entire building, sewer connections, rough-in plumbing, framing the interior and expansion, and installing new windows. The project aligns with the original plan to maximize the use of downtime and deliver key items. The next phase of construction is scheduled to begin August 1st, with a final phase approval expected on August 25th. The project is on schedule for a January completion. Staff recommended approval.
City of Weatherford Honored by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)
The City of Weatherford recognized its employees and leadership for their support of Guard and Reserve members through the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program. Major Chad Marbutt and ESGR representatives presented several awards. James Hotop received a Patriotic Employer Award, nominated by Major Chad Marbutt. Chief Jonathan Peacock received a Patriotic Employer Award, nominated by Staff Sergeant Sarah Allen. The City of Weatherford as a whole received the 'Above and Beyond' award and the Pro Patria Award, a state-level recognition. The city was also recognized as a finalist for the national Secretary of War Freedom Award. The awards highlight the city's commitment to supporting its employees who serve in the Guard and Reserves, including providing resources, communication during deployment, and family support. The city's Statement of Support was signed, pledging compliance with USERRA and encouraging employment of service members and veterans.
