Tampa City Council Amends School Zone Speed Camera Ordinance, Expanding Locations
The Tampa City Council discussed amendments to the city's ordinance regarding school zone speed camera enforcement. The primary change involves updating the locations where speed cameras will be deployed. The previous ordinance identified 12 school zones, but a new study by Redspeed identified 18 zones with significant speeding issues. The proposed amendment replaces the old list of locations with the new, data-supported list of 18 zones, aiming to enhance student safety by targeting areas with the most frequent speeding violations. The council also confirmed that the contract is a piggyback agreement, meaning its terms cannot be altered, but the city ordinance prohibiting data sharing for surveillance purposes would still apply. Violations are time-limited to school hours and require exceeding the speed limit by 10 miles per hour, and citations do not carry points on a driver's license. The council passed the amendment on first reading, with further discussion and a potential vote on second reading scheduled for July 16th, 2026.
