Talladega Welcomes New Restaurants, Announces Sales Tax Holiday and Backpack Giveaway
Councilmember Hall reported on the positive impact of the Knoxville Park Transformer event, which included voter registration and outreach. She also noted the upcoming opening of three new restaurants in Talladega: one in the old Pizza Hut building, one in the Cafe Royale building, and one in the Boswell Wings building, expected within a month. Hall also mentioned the success of Heritage Hall's art camps and promoted an upcoming show at The Ritz featuring John London's music. Councilmember Spratling announced the city's back-to-school sales tax holiday from July 17th to July 19th, 2026, and a drive-through backpack giveaway on July 25th, 2026, at Mount Canaan Baptist Church.
City Council Approves Weed Abatement for Multiple Properties
The city council addressed weed abatement issues for multiple properties. Resolutions 6720, 6721, and 6722 were approved for properties at 433 East Street North (two parcels) and 514 East Street South. Additionally, Resolutions 6724 through 6730 were approved, declaring properties at 301 Alexander Street, 109 Henry Street, 502 Parkway Avenue East, 416 Damien Avenue East, 331 Highland Avenue, 105 Miller Street, and 308 Main Street as public nuisances due to weeds. An additional property at 671 Brecon Access Road (Resolution 6735) was added for consideration. Resolution 6723 for 514 Court Street North was initially included but later removed as it had already been addressed. The council emphasized the need to follow due process for property owners, even if it means a longer timeline for correction.
City Council Approves Job Description Amendments and New Position Creation
The city council reviewed and unanimously approved Ordinance #1976, which amends job descriptions for various existing positions and creates several new ones. The affected departments include Water and Sewer, Finance, Patrol (Lieutenant and Sergeant), Public Information Officer, Purchasing, and Parks and Recreation. New positions created are Wastewater Lift Station Technician, Wastewater Plant Chief Operator, Water Plant Chief Operator, Parks and Recreation Administrative Assistant, and Grants Coordinator (Finance). City Manager Warwick confirmed that the job descriptions underwent extensive review by the employee committee and civil service, receiving unanimous approval from both. He also certified that all presented job descriptions had gone before the relevant committees. The ordinance does not include immediate raises but allows for promotions. All new positions and updated descriptions were budgeted for.
City Council Approves Travel Requests for Staff Training and Conferences
The city council approved travel requests for various city officials and staff to attend professional development conferences and training sessions. Resolution 6731 approved travel for Chief Ron McElrath, Captain Dennis McDaniel, and Captain Bob Curtis to attend a supervisor's liability for law enforcement class in Jacksonville, Alabama. Resolution 6732 approved travel for Ms. Thomas to the Southern Software Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Resolution 6733 approved travel for Joanne Metland and Emily Light to the AAMCA Clerks Winter Conference in Orange Beach, Alabama. Resolution 6734 approved travel for Brian Sharp to a women's in law enforcement training in Montgomery, Alabama. Funds for these requests have already been allocated.
City Council Approves Use of Softball Facilities for Youth Travel Organization
Ms. Tamika Ashley, representing a travel softball organization called 'Dimes of Talladega', requested the use of the City of Talladega's softball facilities. The organization aims to develop young girls into confident leaders by teaching discipline, teamwork, accountability, respect, and perseverance. Hosting practices, tournaments, and clinics is expected to attract visitors, boosting local businesses through increased spending on dining, fuel, and shopping, and generating economic activity. The council approved the request, contingent on the availability of fields, with the understanding that the city manager and Mr. Summer Amherst would finalize scheduling. Councilman Keith made the motion to accept the request, and it was seconded.
