Highway 149 Sewer Repair Project Completed and Approved
The city council approved Resolution Number 168 2026, accepting the completion of the 2025 RFP Number 1, Highway 149 cross-country sewer repair project. This project involved replacing a section of shallow, shallow cross-country sanitary sewer pipe near Highway 149 that had a history of blockages. The entire section between manholes was replaced with 8-inch ductile iron pipe, including encasement in concrete where it crossed ditches. The final contract sum was $46,680, with a final payment of $3,987.77. The funding for this project came from the sewer fund (610). The repair is expected to resolve ongoing issues with the old, corroded pipe.
Nine Pickleball Courts Approved for Trager Park; Fundraising Nears Completion
The city council considered and approved Resolution Number 163 2026, authorizing the agreement for the development and construction of nine pickleball courts at Trager Park. The project is a collaboration between the city and Friends of Atamwa Parks, with the latter leading fundraising efforts. The old tennis courts have been removed, preparing the site for construction. Friends of Atamwa Parks has raised approximately 75% of their Phase One fundraising goal of $218,000, with $57,000 remaining. Construction is contingent on securing all project funds, with a target completion for Phase One by the end of 2026. Phase Two, including additional amenities, will follow in 2027.
City Council Tables Finance Director Appointment Amid Salary and Budget Concerns
The city council discussed and ultimately tabled the appointment of Michael Lee as the Director of Finance. Concerns were raised regarding the proposed salary of $142,812, especially in light of the city's budget shortfall. Council members debated the necessity of attracting top talent with competitive salaries versus public perception and fiscal responsibility. An alternative of combining the Finance Director role with the City Administrator position was proposed as a cost-saving measure, though potential operational challenges were noted. The council decided to hold a special work session to further discuss this matter before making a final decision.
City Approves Sale of 340 North Marian Street Property for $7,777.77
The city council approved the sale of certain real property located at 340 North Marian Street, Atamwa, Iowa, to Alma Perez for $7,777.77. This approval followed a public hearing where the bid was presented by the Planning and Zoning Coordinator, Mr. Rush. The city had accepted bids until 2:00 PM on June 18th, 2026, and received only one bid from Ms. Perez. The recommendation to accept this bid and approve the sale was passed and adopted via Resolution Number 164 2026.
Oxbow Lagoon Trail Reconstruction Completed; Final Payment Approved
The city council accepted the completion of the Oxbow Lagoon Trail project behind Church Street and approved the final pay request. This project reconstructed 650 ft of 5-inch thick asphalt trail, widened to 10 feet and made ADA compliant. A previous change order reduced the contract sum by $44,821.20 due to budgetary reasons, removing 500 ft of resurfacing from the original plan. The total project cost was $75,876.60, funded by a legacy grant obtained by the Trails Council, with no direct city budget funds used except for inspection costs. The project involved trail improvements and enhanced accessibility.
