Ottawa Council Approves Payrolls, Expenses, and Various Project Payments
The council approved bi-weekly salary payrolls for June 19th, 2026, totaling $76,7554, and for July 2nd, 2026, totaling $733,33156. Additionally, the bimonthly expense report dated July 7th, 2026, showing expenses in an unspecified amount, was approved. The council also approved accepting and paying a quote of $19,580 from Grand Rapids Enterprises Incorporated for the Lincoln Douglas Park Basketball Court from the playground and recreation fund. Furthermore, a bid of $1,22,865.35 from Advanced Asphalt Company for the 2026 street maintenance program was approved and to be paid from the general corporate motor fuel tax fund. Ottawa central dispatch handled 826 911 calls and 4,681 administrative calls. The fire chief's report for June 2026 listed 34 still alarms, 47 activated alarms, 290 medic calls, 6 mutual aid calls, 237 patients, 2 transfers, totaling 371 calls for the month. Emergency overtime was 11 hours, and structure, contents, and vehicle loss were zero. 24 residents received medical services. A memorandum of understanding regarding school resource officers between the city and Ottawa Township High School District number 140 was adopted.
Ottawa Council Addresses Employment Agreements, Appointments, and Zoning Variance Decisions
The council received and placed on file a resolution authorizing the execution of amendments to employment agreements for multiple ENCAD employees. A resolution was adopted appointing Don Gier to the Jets SBA subcommittee as the city of Ottawa, Illinois representative. The council also received and placed on file the report of zoning board of appeals meeting from June 22nd, 2026, concerning a variance request for 124 East Van Beerren Street. The council concurred with the zoning board's recommendation to grant a sideyard setback variance with a condition of not less than one foot from the west property line for constructing an addition to a detached accessory structure, while denying requests for a rear yard setback variance and to allow over the maximum area to exceed 900 sq ft. A follow-up ordinance related to these decisions was to be passed.
Ottawa Council Approves Garage Construction, Facade Renovations, and Addresses Zoning Variance
The council considered three ordinances authorizing the issuance of certificates of appropriateness: one for 804 Chapel Street, owned by the Fork and Family LLC, to construct a detached garage; another for 620 through 630 Court Street, owned by West Becker Properties LLC, for facade renovations; and a third for 615 through 617 Lel Street, also owned by Westbecker Properties LLC, for facade renovations. The facade drawings for the Court Street project were noted as sharp and a nice addition. The council also reviewed a zoning board of appeals recommendation regarding a variance request for 124 East Van Beerren Street, granting a sideyard setback variance for an addition to an accessory structure but denying rear yard and area variances.
