National Night Out to Feature Helicopter Landing; Speed Chart Ordered
Alderman Deus provided an update on National Night Out, announcing that Lifelight Helicopter will be landing at Hegler Park at 5:00 PM to kick off the event. He also noted that a speed chart has been ordered with an estimated lead time of 75 days.
City to Investigate Sewage Backups; Sump Pump Connections Suspected
In response to Mr. Zevon's concerns about sewage backups, city staff (Brian) discussed the city's sewer check valve program. Mr. Zevon described his system with a gate valve and a manually operated flapper check valve. City engineer Jordan explained that while they had separated storm and sanitary sewers in the area in 2017, the backup could potentially be caused by sump drains or tile drains being pumped into the sanitary sewer, referencing similar issues in other subdivisions. The city plans to televise and clean the sewer lines in the area again to check for blockages and identify any sump pump connections. They also discussed ejector pump ordinances and the possibility of smoke tests to identify illegal connections.
Pay Request Approved for Road Improvements Project
The council authorized pay request number one for Universal Asphalt and Excavating Inc. totaling $129,38.35 for work completed to date on the road improvements MFTt 2026 project. The motion to approve was made.
City Council Considers Annual Appropriation Ordinance for Fiscal Year 2026-2027
An ordinance was presented for appropriating all corporate purposes for the city of Lau for the fiscal year beginning May 1, 2026, and ending April 30, 2027. The motion was made by Tax and seconded by Reynolds.
City Council Conducts Public Hearing on Annual Budget and Appropriations Ordinance
The council opened and closed a public hearing regarding the annual budget and appropriations ordinance for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget was described as a financial map with opportunities for potential grants and a working document. The city clerk emphasized that appropriation does not mandate spending, and expenditures are contingent on secured revenues. The motion to open the public hearing was made by Merry S. M Reynolds and seconded by Thompson. The motion to close the public hearing was made by Thompson and seconded by Reynolds.
