New Milford Council Introduces Ordinance to Allow Expansion of Non-Conforming Structures

The council introduced an ordinance (2026-18) to amend land use regulations, specifically chapter 30, subsection 30-28.8, concerning non-conforming buildings and uses. The purpose of this ordinance is to allow for the expansion of pre-existing non-conforming structures without requiring a variance, provided the proposed addition does not worsen the non-conforming condition. A public hearing for this ordinance is scheduled for the July 27th meeting.

Arts Committee Success, Library Policy Updates, and Librarian Appointments Highlighted

Councilwoman Grant reported on the Arts Committee's successful May 30th event and their plans for a spring event next year. The Senior Advisory Board did not meet this month and will not meet in July or August but continues its activities. The Library approved a revised reading room policy and two other policies. Shannon O'Brien has been appointed as a full-time professional children's librarian after serving in an acting capacity. Brian Lady is retiring after almost 30 years as a reference librarian and will be missed.

Board of Health to Focus on Vaccines at National Night Out; Fire Department Active in Community Events

Councilwoman Duffy reported that the Board of Health met and will recess for the summer, but plans to participate in National Night Out with a focus on the importance of vaccines. Inspectors are commended for their diligence. The Fire Department has been active responding to calls and participating in events like National Night Out and assisting with the Junior Police Academy. They will also assist with campfires at National Night Out. The Arts Committee has been involved in the America 250th initiative, organizing fun events and avoiding duplication with county-level activities. The area's rich Revolutionary War history is highlighted, with events planned throughout the weekend in surrounding towns.

Borough Announces Updated Income Limits for Housing Rehabilitation Program

The borough has updated the income limits for its housing rehabilitation program for 2026, which are posted in borough hall and on the website. New Milford residents who own their homes and fall below these updated income limits may qualify for up to $20,000 in forgivable, no-interest, 10-year loans for home repairs. The program is highlighted as a valuable resource that has not been fully utilized by residents.

Blue Acres Visioning Continues; Environmental Commission Finalizes Energy Plan and Supports Pedestrian Safety Grant

Councilwoman Sanders reported on the successful Rutgers NJUD Blue Acres visioning event held June 1st, which included public participation and dynamic conversation about concerns and visions for the Blue Acres area. A second public meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 17th, to present concept ideas developed by Rutgers students. The Environmental and Energy Commission (EEC) presented its Community Energy Plan on May 27th and has been finalizing reports for grant purposes. The Environmental Commission and Green Team submitted letters of support for the DOT pedestrian safety improvement grant program for the middle school. The Green Team's tracks program continues to gain usage, with a reminder for residents to use the DPW bin for larger quantities of plastic film. Volunteers are sought for the Green Team and Environmental Commission.
