Mission City Council Approves Election, Grants, and Infrastructure Projects
The City Council approved Resolution 2068, ordering a general election for November 3rd, 2026, to elect a mayor and council members for places one and three. Filing for these positions will begin on Monday, July 20th, and run through August 1st. They also approved accepting a $250,000 grant award from the Texas General Land Office for the Resilient Communities Program, which will fund planning activities for an updated comprehensive plan, including hazard risk assessment, population projections, housing studies, land use, infrastructure, economic development, and zoning ordinances. A variance was granted to Ordinance 2198 for the Boys and Girls Club to conduct a fireworks display on July 15, 2026, for the Pony International Softball World Series opening ceremony. Bids will be solicited for the Horner Road extension project, a quarter-mile roadway connecting to First Street and Home Depot, funded by the Mission Redevelopment Authority.
Mission Proclaims July as Parks and Recreation Month
The city council proclaimed July 2027 as Parks and Recreation Month in Mission, Texas. The proclamation recognized the importance of parks and recreation in enhancing the quality of life, promoting physical activity, fostering community, contributing to economic vitality, and preserving the natural environment. Several parks and recreation staff and advisory board members were acknowledged for their contributions.
Speedy 5K Raises Over $50,000 for Law Enforcement Scholarships
The 7th annual Speedy 5K, organized by the Speedy Moore Foundation, was a success, attracting over 2,300 participants and raising $50,181.18 for scholarships for children of law enforcement officers in the Rio Grande Valley. The event honors the late Corporal Speedy and has awarded a total of $190,000 in scholarships since its establishment. The event also noted its positive economic impact on local businesses and discussed plans for future safety enhancements, including potentially closing additional lanes on Sherry Road.
Boys and Girls Club Reports Financial Surplus and Program Success
The Boys and Girls Club presented their quarterly financial report, showing a year-to-date revenue of $271,864 and expenses of $240,000, resulting in a surplus of $31,739. Their ending cash balance was $249,929, with an expectation to increase to $440,000. The report also detailed upcoming grants totaling approximately $350,000 and highlighted successful programs like the summer program, flag football, and volleyball. The organization received recognition for its support staff and is implementing new security measures.
Mission Economic Development Announces Business Growth and New Initiatives
The Mission Economic Development reported on several key initiatives. Seven businesses received $150,000 in grant funding through the Downtown Assistance Program for improvements like equipment purchases and facade upgrades. Universal electric vehicle chargers are now available at the SEED, marking the first in Starr County. RGB Healthy Vending is expanding its operations at the SEED, adding up to 15 new employees. Zetluma Sustainable Aluminum (Century Recycling) will break ground on a $50 million recycling plant on July 28th. The Mission Ready internship program is nearing completion with 15 students working with local businesses, and a scholarship program at South Texas College is available for Mission residents, with a deadline of July 31st. Sales tax revenue for June showed an 8.8% increase over last year.
