City Council Adopts Safe Streets for All Plan to Enhance Road Safety and Secure Federal Funding
The city council discussed the application for a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant aims to develop a framework for safety projects, focusing on infrastructure and policy changes to address fatal and serious injury crashes. The adoption of this safety action plan is a requirement for receiving the grant funding, which has been applied for and includes a focus on emergency vehicle preemption along US 1. The plan identifies a high-injury network where 40% of crashes occur on 8% of roadways, with 82% of fatal and serious injury crashes and over half of vulnerable road user crashes occurring on this network. The council adopted Resolution 2026-57 to approve the plan, with implementation steps including collaboration with FDOT and annual progress tracking.
City Pursues Renewal of Agreement for Unlicensed Construction Enforcement
Councilmember Landry requested an update on unlicensed construction enforcement. The discussion revealed that the city currently lacks its own construction board of appeals and has previously relied on the county's board through an interlocal agreement that expired. The council authorized the purchase of real property from Tyrone Leatherwood and Mary Lady McKenzie for an amount not to exceed $400,000. This property is designated on the BPAS list and was identified in the watershed master plan as a natural functioning area suitable for acquisition. The resolution appropriates funds for the purchase and authorizes the City Manager to execute contracts and closing documents. Resolution 2026-64 was adopted for this purchase.
