City Council Approves Adjustments to Parking Rates and Citation Penalties
The city council discussed and approved adjustments to parking meter rates and parking citation penalties. The proposed variable parking meter rates aim to manage demand by adjusting prices based on location and season. Parking citation penalties were also proposed to be increased to better align with market rates and cover rising operational costs. The council debated the merits of annual adjustments, ultimately voting to increase parking citations by $6 across the board but opting against automatic annual increases for both citations and meter rates. They also agreed to a compromise on the variable parking meter rates for downtown and north Manhattan Beach on-street parking, setting a consistent rate of $3.50 for peak season and $3 for off-peak season. The implementation of new parking kiosks was also discussed, with an expected rollout in November. Coastal development permits were required due to changes in parking meter rates within the coastal zone.
