Parks and Rec Commission Approves Fee Increases for After School and Summer Day Camp Programs
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission discussed and voted on fee updates for the Park After School program and the Valley Park Summer Day Camp. For the Park After School program, fees were proposed to increase from $1,900 annually to $3,150 annually to achieve cost recovery, with 45 program spaces already confirmed for the upcoming fall session. For the Valley Park Summer Day Camp, weekly fees were proposed to increase to $255 for residents and $275 for non-residents, up from $185/$195, to ensure financial sustainability and competitiveness with neighboring agencies. Both fee increases were met with general support from the commission and public speakers, acknowledging the need for cost recovery and the program's value, though discussions also touched on implementing incremental fee increases in the future and exploring scholarship programs. The commission voted 5-0 to recommend the approval of the Park After School program fee update and 5-0 to recommend the approval of the Valley Park Summer Day Camp fee update.

Surfers Walk of Fame Plaques to be Relocated from Pier; Railing Recommended as Immediate Solution, Schumacher Plaza for Long-Term
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission discussed options for relocating the Surfers Walk of Fame plaques, which are currently embedded in the municipal pier deck. Due to deterioration, theft, and structural concerns with the pier, staff recommended removing the existing plaques and installing new stainless steel plaques on the pier railing as an immediate solution (Option 1). This option has available funding through CIP 623. Stakeholders, however, prefer other options like a Greg Knoll statue (Option 2) or installations in Schumacher Plaza (Option 3) or Pier Plaza (Option 5) as a long-term solution. The commission voted 5-0 to recommend to City Council the immediate relocation of plaques to the pier railing (Option 1) and to designate Schumacher Plaza as the intended long-term location (Option 3), with the understanding that long-term options will likely require significant private funding.
