Greg Sullivan addressed the council regarding Ordinance 072026, the fuel station ordinance. He pointed out a fundamental inconsistency: while the ordinance establishes a half-mile separation between new stations due to overconcentration, it exempts grocery stores larger than 25,000 square feet from this rule. Sullivan argued that this exemption, which places no limit on fuel center size or setback from sensitive areas like schools, undermines the ordinance's purpose by not considering cumulative impacts. He used the example of a proposed 32-pump Costco fuel center near schools to illustrate the increased traffic, emissions, and operational intensity. Sullivan requested the ordinance be referred back to the planning commission for review of the grocery store exemption's consistency with the ordinance's purpose.
Council Member Grove Shares Insights from Community Events and CML Conference; Receives Leadership Award
Council Member Grove reported on recent community engagements, including a board and commissions dinner, a carboy wine tasting event, and attending the Colorado Municipal League (CML) conference where she presented and learned about other jurisdictions' practices. She also toured downtown Westminster's redevelopment and noted their approach to environmentally friendly buildings and offering free consultants for LEED certification. Grove attended the Mont View Flats opening and encouraged participation in 'Meet, Greet, and Eat' events for community interaction. She also mentioned the Western Welcome Week event starting August 7th, with a parade on the 15th. Grove also highlighted that she received a leadership award from CML.
Resident Calls for Enhanced Street Safety Following Fatal Collision
During public comment, Jose Bionis commended the council and city staff for their work on safety, but highlighted ongoing issues with increased crashes, including a fatal vehicle-bicycle collision over the weekend. Bionis emphasized that lower speeds can be life-saving and thanked the council for proactive measures. He also noted another incident where a person was hit on the sidewalk. He stressed shared responsibility for road safety and encouraged continued enforcement and policy changes.
School Meal Programs Provide Significant Support to Littleton Families and Local Economy
Leah Schwarzerok provided an update on school meals and their impact. With the 'Healthy School Meals for All' program, all students receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of income, providing significant help to families facing rising grocery costs. She noted the program dissolves the stigma of free/reduced meals and believes a food hub for Littleton is needed due to increased meal participation. Schwarzerok reported increased lunch participation by 14,000 students and breakfast by 13,000 last year. Local grant funding of over $250,000 is supporting the local economy and reducing environmental footprint by providing fresh, seasonal produce. She also mentioned support for food pantries and increased capacity to distribute healthy foods.
