Park Commissioners Discuss Project Updates and May Highlights

The Board of Park Commissioners approved the minutes from the previous meeting. Updates were provided on various park and city projects, including citywide lighting, Grant Street phase two, Elm Swamp Road improvements with trail extensions, Ford Ice cleanup, Wit Road construction, and the old street garage renovation which includes picnic shelters, splash pads, and skate park features. Updates were also given on the Abner Longley perimeter path, storage building renovations, and the Leap District projects like 200 West road and trail construction connecting to the Big Four Trail, and Meta's Hall Road construction which includes Big Four Trail gates. Westside Park is moving forward with community input, and the softball diamond project is progressing. May highlights included the end of the spring pickleball league, completed LHS baseball season, a well-attended 'Big Run' at Abner Longley, the Boone County Classic Road Bike Race, and the opening of Seashore Water Park. Maintenance efforts included placing flags, replacing bushes around the War Memorial, and addressing vandalism issues at Memorial Park's big green slide, with repairs being made and security measures in place. The department also planted memorial trees, installed a memorial bench, repaired a sewage line, and hosted a disc golf tournament. Two weddings were held at the arboretum and conservation pond. Seashore Water Park staff received training, and the park hosted in-service and maintenance/safety training. Stone Eater Bike Park received repairs. Rebecca Rustin, a valedictorian and appointee to the Naval Academy, was recognized. June events include day camps, water park visits, a Fourth of July parade, carnival, fireworks, concerts, a car show, sensory swim events, a cancer society car show, and a symphony performance. The next board meeting is scheduled for July 8th.
