Zoning Board Denies Sign Variance Request for Kava Restaurant

The Zoning Board of Adjustments considered a variance request for a signage area increase for the Kava restaurant at 2915 South Gulf Freeway. The applicant sought to increase the allowable sign area from 18.75 square feet to 59.27 square feet for an attached wall sign on the rear elevation, citing visibility concerns due to adjacent traffic and parking. Staff noted that five of the eight criteria for granting a variance were not met, specifically regarding unique hardship and alternatives like relocating existing signs or developing a site-wide wayfinding program. The applicant argued that the measurement of cabinet signs versus channel letters put them at a disadvantage for maintaining brand consistency. Despite the applicant's request for a variance to allow a cabinet sign of the proposed size, the board denied the motion unanimously.
