Santa Fe City Council Approves Fireworks Discharge, Bans Sales Within City Limits
The city council held the second and final reading of an ordinance concerning the sale and discharge of fireworks within city limits. Following extensive discussion and public comment from a fireworks business owner who expressed concerns about the impact of allowing sales within the city on her established business, the council amended the ordinance. The amendment allows for the discharge of fireworks within city limits but prohibits their sale within the city. This decision reflects a compromise between allowing residents to use fireworks and addressing business concerns and previous zoning restrictions that forced businesses out of the city. The council voted to approve the amended ordinance.
Santa Fe Council Reviews FY2026-2027 Budget, Approves Capital Improvement Plan
The council engaged in a detailed discussion regarding the city's budget for fiscal year 2026-2027, focusing on capital expenditures and departmental requests. The City Manager presented a preliminary outlook, emphasizing a conservative approach to reserves, advocating for at least four months, preferably five, rather than the policy minimum of three months. The discussion covered proposed allocations for city hall renovations, park improvements, public works equipment, street paving, storm sewer projects, and vehicle purchases. The council reviewed financial projections, including reserve balances and the impact of different tax rates. A motion to approve the capital improvement plan was made and passed.
Organic Natural Energy LLC Awarded Contract for Rungi Park Generator Installation
The council considered and approved a contract with Organic Natural Energy LLC for the installation of a standby gas generator at the Rungi Park Community Center. The contract amount is not to exceed $39,465. The city manager is authorized to execute the contract and related documents. Organic Natural Energy LLC was the lowest bidder among three proposals received, and they are a newer company in Santa Fe, having relocated from League City. This project is funded through a grant from the GLO, making it a zero-cost project for the city, barring any change orders.
